What Pain Reliever Should You Take for a Toothache?

A woman suffering from a toothache.
If you developed a toothache, your first reaction may be to reach for a bottle of over the counter pain reliever. However, if you do not know what is causing your toothache, or if the toothache becomes severe, you may want to see your dentist first.

He or she will have a harder time determining what is wrong if they cannot determine the source of the pain because you are no longer in any pain. Call their office and tell them what is going on first, then take a pain reliever if they tell you it is safe to do so.

Types of Pain Relievers that Work for Toothaches

Aspirin is likely the most common pain reliever that adults take, as it helps with pain and it is safe for nearly all types of pain. It should not ever be given to children because of the effects if can cause, but for adults, taking an aspirin is typically alright. However, make sure you never put the pill directly on the source of the pain, as it can cause significant damage to the tissues in your mouth.

Ibuprofen is known as an NSAID, which means that it reduces inflammation and helps alleviate pain. However, for people that have sensitive stomachs, this can cause a lot of stomach upset. Acetaminophen is easier on the stomach, but does very little to reduce inflammation. It does help to alleviate pain, however. Both can help with a toothache when your dentist says that it is safe to take one.

A toothache is never something to ignore. It is a sign that something is wrong within your mouth. When you first notice a toothache starting, contact our office and see what he or she has to say and how soon they can see you. They can help your mouth feel better.
